President Obama Confirms Osama Bin Laden Dead

Osama Bin Laden, the founder of Al-Quaeda and the one responsible for the September 11 attacks on the US was reported dead this Sunday, May 1, 2011. The news showed people cheering with happiness over the news, and President Obama states that “Justice has been done”.

However, I feel that this will not put an end to an issue that the US and the world has been struggling over for many years. In fact, I think that this has just added a new factor to this issue. As President Obama said, “The death of Bin Laden marks the most significant achivement to date in our nations effort to defeat Al-Quaeda. However, his death does not mark the end of our effort.”

Do you think that killing Osama Bin Laden was the right thing to do? What kind of effects will his death have on the US?

I don’t approve of people cheering over Bin Laden’s death, and President Obama was careful not to show any triumphalism as he made his announcement.

However, was this killing an acceptable part of an ongoing war, or was it a cold-blooded political assassination? There’s a very big difference, especially as American commandos violated Pakistani sovereignty to carry out their mission.

I won’t miss Bin Laden, he was the leader of a terror organization which murdered thousands of innocent people. But if the ‘war on terror’ is a moral cause, justice should be seen to be done.

Imagine if an American had committed an act of terror in Pakistan, and Pakistani soldiers flew into US territory to kill the terrorist. Would that be ok?

Its a complicated issue, in part because America was frustrated by Pakistan’s lack of action against terrorists. They ask: how was Bin Laden able to live near a Pakistani army base for years without being detected?

This killing might provoke further terrorism, or it might deal a heavy blow to Al Qaeda. Time will tell.

I don’t think that killing Osama Bin Laden was right. Terrorism will get increasing because the death of Osama Bin Laden stimulated Al Qaeda. Moreover more innocent people will be victimized. This event maked the war worse.

    This topic is very difficult.
this problem is not between US and Al-Quaeda but all over the world.
We have to have opinion as Japanese people.
I think that US decision is arbitrary.
I don’t know Japanese Prime minister’s coment toword it, but he could not criticize US easily. It is because the connection between Japan and US is very strong and the center of the world is still US.
